The campground is just a short drive away from amenities like gas, food, and some of the area’s most popular hiking trails.
Cloud’s Rest Campground
This campground is located at the end of Movie Flat Road, a dirt road that ends in an expansive parking lot and picnic area. The campsites here are spacious and provide great views of both Mt Whitney and Lone Pine Peak – the tallest mountains in the area.
Whitney Portal Campground
This campground is a short drive from Mt Whitney and offers the closest access to the hiking trail leading to this iconic peak’s summit. But you don’t have to be an experienced mountaineer to enjoy camping at Whitney Portal; there are also plenty of other hiking trails in the area.
Third Recess Campground
This is a great campsite if you want some solitude and scenic views. Located at the end of Movie Flat Road, it’s far off the beaten path and offers excellent views of Mt Whitney, Lone Pine Peak, and other surrounding mountain ranges. A small creek runs through the area, providing a soothing sound and refreshing drinking water.
Lone Pine Campground
This is an excellent alternative if you want to avoid driving up Movie Flat Road to get to your campsite. Located near the main road into Alabama Hills, it’s easy to access and close to some great hiking trails, including the popular Movie Trail.
First Recess Campground
This campsite is at the end of a small dirt road and offers loads of space for pitching your tent or putting up your RV. It’s also close to some fantastic hiking trails and features excellent views of nearby Owens Peak to the east and on the west side of Alabama Hills.
Whitney Portal Road
This is a great campsite if you’re looking for something different from your typical campground setup. There are no designated campsites along this road, but there are plenty of pull-offs where you can set up camp and enjoy the spectacular views of Mt Whitney.
Second Recess Campground
This is one of the larger campgrounds in Alabama Hills and offers plenty of space for multiple tents or RVs, a fire pit, a picnic table, and even some communal wood you can use to light your campfire. The area is also very close to the trailheads of several popular hiking trails, including the Whitney Portal Trail and Movie Trail.
Upper Rock Creek Campground
Located close to the western edge of Alabama Hills, this campground offers excellent views of nearby Lone Pine Peak and Mt Whitney, along with a bubbling creek that runs through the area. The campsites are spacious but can get crowded on busy weekends, so arrive early if you want a good spot.
Lower Rock Creek Campground
This is another excellent campground in Alabama Hills, and it’s located near Mt Whitney, as well as several popular hiking trails. The campsites are spacious and offer plenty of room for your tent or RV, and a small creek runs through the area.
